Here we see two things. First, even the best saints have their share of suffering. The proud and the wicked may live in comfort and ease, while David, though he stayed close to God and kept his duty, was still afflicted. God’s people often drink the waters of a full cup of sorrow (Psalm 73:10).
Second, God’s people can gain real good from affliction. David could speak from experience, “It was good for me.” Through his troubles, he learned many lessons and was stirred up to duties he might otherwise have neglected. God sent affliction so that David would learn his statutes, and that purpose was met. The suffering helped him grow in knowledge and grace, because the one who disciplined him was also teaching him. Correction and reproof give wisdom.
