auto_stories Bible Guided Commentary

David had often spoken of his great love for God. Here he speaks of his great love for God’s people. Notice, first, why he loved them. It was not mainly because they were his closest friends, most loyal to his cause, or most ready to help him. He loved them because they feared God and kept his commandments, and so honored God and helped support his kingdom among people. Our love for the saints is truly sincere when we love them because we see God at work in them and because of the service they give him.

Second, notice how he showed that love. He was a companion of them. He shared not only spiritual fellowship with them through the same faith and hope, but also joined with them in holy worship in the Lord’s courts, where rich and poor, ruler and common person, meet together. He shared their joys and sorrows (Hebrews 10:33). He spoke with them openly, told them about his own spiritual experiences, and listened to theirs. He did not only count those as his companions who feared God. He also made himself a companion to all who feared God, wherever he found them. Even though he was a king, he was willing to associate with the poorest of his subjects who feared God (Psalm 15:4; James 2:1).
