From this verse, we can see the character of a godly person.

He makes God’s favor his true happiness: “You are my portion, O Lord.” Other people put their joy in wealth and honor in this world. Their share is only for this life. They stop there, and they want no more, “these are your good things” (Luke 16:25). But everyone set apart for God takes the Lord as the share of their inheritance and cup, and nothing less will satisfy them. David can appeal to God here and say, “Lord, you know that I have chosen you as my portion, and I depend on you to make me happy.”

He also makes God’s law his guide. “I have said that I would keep your words,” and what he has said by God’s grace, he will do, and keep doing to the end. Those who take God as their portion must also take him as their ruler and give him their loyalty. Since we have promised to keep his word, we should often remind ourselves of that promise (Psalm 39:1).
