When David was mocked because of his devotion to God, he did more than keep his integrity. He also comforted himself. He not only endured the insult, he took it calmly, and it did not steal his peace or disturb his quiet trust in God.
It comforted him to know that he was suffering for God’s sake. It also helped him that even his enemies could find no fault in him, except in matters connected with his God (Daniel 6:5). Those who are mocked for obeying God’s law can take comfort in this truth: the shame of Christ will, in the end, prove greater riches than the treasures of Egypt.
What David drew strength from was the memory of God’s judgments in earlier times, that is, God’s works and dealings with people in the past, both in mercy to his people and in justice against those who oppressed them. We should remember God’s judgments from long ago, from our own early days and from our fathers’ days, for comfort and encouragement in the way of God. He is still the same God today.
