David here tells us something that will help us too. He had been mocked for his religion. Though he was a man of honor, careful judgment, and had served his country well, the proud still laughed at him because he was devout and sincere. They made fun of his praying and called it empty talk. They mocked his seriousness and called it gloom. They mocked his careful obedience and called it needless strictness. These were proud people who took pleasure in sneering at others.
Yet they did not laugh him out of his faith. “They have done all they could to make me give it up out of shame, but none of these things move me. I have not turned away from your law because of it.” As David said when Michal, his wife and Saul’s daughter, mocked him, “If this is being vile, I will be even more vile.” He had not only kept God’s law in the end, he had not even stepped away from it.
We should never shrink from any duty or miss any chance to do good because people mock us. The traveler keeps going even when dogs bark at him. Those who cannot bear a harsh word for Christ show that they can bear very little for him.
