Here David explains what it meant for him to meditate on God’s statutes (Psalm 119:23). That habit helped him greatly when princes sat together and spoke against him. If suffering made him sad, God’s word comforted him. It was his delight, more than the pleasures of court, camp, city, or country.
Sometimes the comfort found in God’s word is sweetest when other comforts have turned bitter. If he felt confused and did not know what to do when the princes spoke against him, God’s statutes gave him counsel. They taught him to bear the wrong patiently and leave his case with God. God’s testimonies are still the best counselors, for both rulers and ordinary people. The phrase means they guide us better than many human advisers can.
Those who want God’s testimonies to be their delight must also take them as their counselors and follow their advice. And those who seek their guidance in times of trouble will also find joy in them when they are at peace.
