See here how David was abused even by great men, who should have known his character and his case better, and should have shown more kindness. Princes sat in council, sat in judgment, and spoke against him. What princes say is not always right, but it is sad when justice is turned bitter, and those who should protect the innocent become their betrayers. In this, David was a picture of Christ, because it was the rulers of this world who mocked and crucified the Lord of glory (1 Corinthians 2:8).
See also David’s way of keeping his peace under these attacks. He thought about God’s statutes, kept doing his duty, and did not let their words trouble him. Like a deaf man, he heard nothing. When they spoke against him, he found in God’s word a voice that spoke for him and gave him comfort, and then none of these things could shake him. Those who delight in fellowship with God can more easily ignore the criticism of people, even rulers.
