David had already prayed that God would open his eyes (Psalms 119:18) and reveal the meaning of his law (Psalms 119:19). Now he adds the strong earnestness of his desire for knowledge and grace, because heartfelt prayer has great power.
His longing was intense. He says, “My soul breaks with longing for your judgments,” or, as some read it, his whole soul is taken up and filled with desire for God’s judgments. All his desires flow in that direction. He feels that he would be ruined and undone if he did not have God’s word, its guidance, its fellowship, and its comfort.
This desire was also steady, and present at all times. It was not a passing mood, or something he felt only now and then when he happened to be in a good frame of mind. Rather, it shows the normal attitude of every holy soul, which hungers for God’s word as necessary food, the kind of food without which a person cannot live.
