Here is David pious, yet poor. He was a man after God’s own heart, one whom the King of kings delighted to honor, and yet he thought of himself as small and despised, and many others did too. A person’s worth does not always protect them from being looked down on. In fact, it often brings more scorn from others and keeps them humble in their own eyes. God has chosen the foolish things of the world, and his people have often had to bear the lot of being despised.
Here is David poor, yet pious. He was small and despised because of his serious devotion to God, yet his conscience could still say that he did not forget God’s precepts, his commands. He would not give up his religion, even when it brought contempt, because he knew God allowed such pressure to test his faithfulness. When we are small and despised, we have even more reason to remember God’s precepts, so they can support us under the burden of a low condition.
