auto_stories Bible Guided Commentary

Here we see David in sorrow. It is deep sorrow, so deep that he says he weeps rivers of tears. Usually, where there is a gracious heart, there is also a weeping eye, in keeping with Christ, who was a man of sorrows and familiar with grief.

David had just prayed for comfort in God’s favor (Psalm 119:135). Now he says he is fit for that comfort and truly needs it, because he is one of those who mourn in Zion, and such people will be comforted (Isaiah 61:3).

This is godly sorrow. He was not weeping mainly because of his own troubles, though he had many. He was grieving over the dishonor done to God, because people do not keep God’s law. Some take this to mean, “because my eyes do not keep your law,” since the eye is a doorway through which much sin comes in and goes out, and so it should be a weeping eye. But it is more likely that he means, “because they do not keep your law,” that is, the people around him (Psalm 119:139). The sins of sinners become the sorrows of saints. We must mourn over what we cannot fix.
