David here prays for a quiet, peaceful life, free from people who trouble and wear him down. “Deliver me from human oppression,” he says, from men whose power is limited and whom God can easily restrain. He asks that his enemies be made to see they are only men (Psalm 9:20), and that he may be rescued from their hands so he can serve God without fear.
David does not mean that he would stop obeying God if trouble continued. Rather, he is saying that freedom from oppression would let him keep God’s commands with more joy and a freer heart. When we ask for earthly blessings with this purpose in view, that they may help us serve God better, we may rightly expect God’s favor.
