auto_stories Bible Guided Commentary

David asks for two great spiritual blessings here, and he is just as earnest for God’s work in him as he was in the previous verse for God’s kindness toward him.

He asks, first, for guidance in the path of duty: “Direct my steps by your word.” After God has led him into the right way, he wants every step he takes to be guided by God’s grace. We should walk by a rule. Every movement of the soul must stay within the limits God’s word sets, so we do not break them, but it must also stay in the paths God’s word lays out, so we do not drift without purpose. That is why we should ask God to direct our steps by his good Spirit.

He asks, second, to be freed from sin’s power: “Do not let any sin rule over me,” meaning, do not let sin gain his consent and carry him off as a captive. We should all fear and hate sin’s rule. If we sincerely pray against it, we can receive this promise as an answer to prayer: (Romans 6:14) Sin will not have dominion over you.
