David shows how much he desired God’s word: “I longed for your commandments.” When he was kept away from God’s worship and ordinances, he longed to be restored to them. When he did enjoy them, he eagerly took in God’s word, like newborn babies craving milk.
When Christ is formed in a person’s heart, he or she feels these holy longings. Someone who has never known that work of grace may not understand them.
David also shows how strong that desire was by the way he describes it: “I opened my mouth and panted.” He was like someone overcome by heat, or nearly suffocated, gasping for a breath of fresh air. Our desire for God and for the memory of his name should be this earnest too (Psalm 42:1, Psalm 42:2; Luke 12:50).
