Here we see, first, God’s care for David as his protector and defender. David took comfort in this when his enemies were fiercely against him: “You are my hiding place and my shield.” When Saul chased David, he often hid in secluded places for safety, and in battle he used a shield for defense. In the same way, God was both for him, a hiding place to keep him from danger, and a shield to keep him in danger, preserving his life from death and his soul from sin.
God’s people are safe under his care. He is called their strength and their shield, their help and their shield, their sun and their shield, their shield and their great reward, and here their hiding place and their shield. By faith, they can run to him and rest in him as their hiding place, where he keeps them secure. By faith, they can also face the power and malice of their enemies with his power, as their shield against every flaming dart.
Second, we see David’s confidence in God. He is safe, and so he is at peace under God’s protection: “I hope in your word,” because God’s word has made him know God and has assured him of God’s kindness. Those who trust God’s promise will share in his power and come under his special protection.
