David made a close, personal use of God’s word. He hid it in his heart and stored it there, so it would be ready whenever he needed it. He valued it highly and wanted to keep it safe, because he did not want to lose it or have it taken from him. God’s word is a treasure, and the only truly safe place to store it is in the heart. If it is only in our houses or in our hands, enemies can take it away. If it is only in our minds, our memory can fail. But if our hearts are shaped by it and its marks remain on our souls, it is secure.

David also had a clear purpose in hiding God’s word in his heart, so that he might not sin against God. Good people are wary of sin and want to stop it before it starts. The best way to guard against sin is to keep God’s word in our hearts, so that we can answer every temptation as our Lord did, with, “It is written.” Then we can use God’s commands against sin’s power, his promises against sin’s pull, and his warnings against sin’s threats.
