Here we are told about the nature of God’s word and the great purpose for which God gave it to the world. It is a lamp and a light. It shows us what we could not know on our own about God and about ourselves. It also reveals what is wrong and what is dangerous, and it guides us in our work and in our way. Without it, the world would be a very dark place. It is a lamp we can hold close and use for our own needs (Proverbs 6:23).
The commandment is like a lamp kept burning by the oil of the Spirit. It is like the lamps in the sanctuary and like the pillar of fire that led Israel. But we must use it rightly. It is not given only to satisfy our eyes or fill our minds with ideas, but to direct our feet and guide our path. It should help us order our lives well, both in choosing the right road in general and in taking the right steps along that road, so that we do not take a wrong path or make a wrong step on the right one.
We truly see God’s goodness in giving us such a lamp and light when we let it guide our feet and our path.
