Here is David’s care to stay away from sin. “I have kept my feet from every evil path,” meaning he checked himself and pulled back as soon as he saw he was moving toward temptation. Even when a way is broad, green, pleasant, and followed by many people, it is still an evil way if it is sinful. David refused to walk there because he looked ahead to where that road would end. His caution was complete, too. He avoided every evil way. “By the words of your lips I have kept myself from the ways of the destroyer” (Psalm 17:4).
He also wanted to stay on the path of duty, so that he might keep God’s word and never break it. His refusal to sin showed that he truly meant to obey God’s word and had made it his rule for life. It also helped him keep God’s word in acts of worship. We cannot worship God with comfort and confidence, and keep his word in our religious duties, while we are carrying guilt or wandering into a wrong path.
