Some writers think David’s instructions to Solomon, which began in Proverbs 4:4, continue to the end of the chapter. Others carry them even to the end of chapter 9. But it is more likely that Solomon begins speaking here again, if not earlier. In these verses, after urging us to walk in wisdom’s paths, he warns us against the path of the wicked.
We must be careful about the ways of sin and avoid anything that looks like sin or leads to it. To do that, we must stay away from sinners and have no fellowship with them. If we want to avoid falling into sinful habits, we must avoid wicked company. The warning in Proverbs 4:14, 4:15 is clear. “Do not enter the path of the wicked.” Our teacher, like a faithful guide, has shown us the right paths in Proverbs 4:11. Here he warns us about side paths that can pull us away.
Those who have been well taught and raised in the right way must never turn aside into the wrong way. They should not even step into it, not even to test it. That kind of experiment is dangerous, and it is hard to get out safely. It is like going into a place where disease is spreading, even if you think you are protected. If we are drawn into evil before we realize it, we must hurry out at once. As soon as we see our mistake, we should stop, turn back, and take no more steps in that direction.
We must hate the ways of sin and sinners and keep far from them with the greatest care. The way of evil may seem pleasant, friendly, and even useful for reaching a worldly goal. But it is still an evil way, and it ends badly. So if you love God and care for your soul, stay away from it. Do not even pass by it, so you will not be tempted to enter. If you are near it, turn away and leave. Keep as far from sin as you can. The force of the warning shows how near the danger is, how badly we need this caution, and how seriously our watchmen, those who warn us, should take their duty.
One reason for this warning is the character of the people whose way we are told to avoid. They are harmful people, as Proverbs 4:16, 4:17 says. They do not merely ignore the harm they do to others. Making mischief is their business, and they do it for the sake of mischief itself. They are always planning and trying to make people fall, ruining body and soul if they can. Wickedness and hatred are part of their nature, and violence marks all they do.
Mischief is rest and sleep to them. Just as a greedy person feels satisfied when he gets money, or an ambitious person when he gets honor, so they feel satisfied when they have said or done something cruel. If they cannot satisfy their envy or revenge, they become upset and restless. Haman, the enemy of the Jews in Esther’s day, felt that way while Mordecai was still unhanged. This also shows how tireless they are in doing harm. They will give up sleep rather than give up the pleasure of upsetting others.
Mischief is also their food and drink. They feed on it and enjoy it. They live by robbery and oppression. Wicked people should not think any time is wasted unless they are doing harm. Good people should be just as eager to do good. And everyone who is wise and wants what is best should avoid the company of the wicked. Their behavior is shameful, because nothing brings greater disgrace on human nature than a love of doing harm. It is also dangerous. Stay away from people who enjoy harming others if you care about your safety. Even if they pretend to be friends, sooner or later they will hurt you. You will ruin yourself if you join with them, and they will ruin you if you do not resist them.
We should also compare the path of the wicked with the right path we are called to follow. The path of the righteous is light, as Proverbs 4:18 says. The path chosen by the just shines on their way and makes it safe and pleasant. Christ is their way, and he is light. God’s word guides them, and it is a light for their feet. They themselves are light in the Lord, and they walk in the light as he is in the light.
This light is bright. Their way shines to them with joy and comfort, and it shines before others with beauty and honor. Others can see their good works (Matthew 5:16). They go forward with holy peace and steadiness, like people walking in daylight. It is like morning light, which breaks through darkness and brings an end to evil deeds (Isaiah 58:8, 58:10).
It is also a growing light. It shines more and more. It is not like a shooting star that quickly disappears, or a candle that burns low and dies out. It is like the rising sun, shining as it climbs. Grace, which guides this way, keeps growing. The one who has clean hands will grow stronger and stronger. The joy of this way, the honor of it, and the happiness that belongs to it all increase.
In the end, this light reaches full daylight. The dawn becomes noon. That is what the enlightened soul moves toward. Believers are not made perfect until they come to heaven, but there they will shine like the sun in its strength (Matthew 13:43). Their graces and joys will be complete. So it is wise to stay close to the path of the just.
The way of sin is darkness, as Proverbs 4:19 says. The works we were warned not to share in are works of darkness.
What true pleasure or satisfaction can people have if they find it only in doing harm? And what sure guidance can they have if they throw God’s word behind them? The way of the wicked is dark, and that makes it dangerous. They stumble, but they do not even know what they tripped over.
So they fall into sin without understanding what temptation led them there, and they do not know how to avoid it next time. They also fall into trouble, but they never ask why God is dealing with them. They do not think about the evil they are doing, or what its end will be (Psalm 82:5; Job 18:5-6). This is the path we are told to avoid.
