The comfort of God’s people is a nation’s honor. A land has real glory when the righteous rejoice, when they have freedom, when they can practice their faith openly, and when they are not mistreated for it. It is also a blessing when the government supports them, speaks kindly to them, and when they prosper, gain influence, and are trusted with responsibility.
By contrast, when the wicked rise, they dim a nation’s beauty. When evil people gain power, they push against everything holy, and honest people are often driven into the shadows. At times, corruption spreads so widely that good people seem to disappear, and, as in Elijah’s day, it looks as if there are no faithful people left because the wicked are everywhere.
