We should do what is worthy of praise, so that even strangers can speak well of us. Our light must shine before people, and we should do good works that can be seen, though we must never do them just so others will notice. Let our actions be the kind that can praise us even in the gates, that is, in public places where people talk about our character (Philippians 4:8).
But after we have done well, we must not praise ourselves. Self-praise shows pride, foolishness, and self-love, and it greatly weakens a person’s reputation. People are quick to criticize the one who boasts about himself. There may be times when we need to defend ourselves, but it is never fitting to applaud ourselves. Self-praise stains the mouth.
