Here we see, first, the good character of a wise and virtuous person. Such a person has control over his own spirit. He keeps rule over himself, over his appetites and passions, and does not let them rebel against reason and conscience. He governs his thoughts, desires, inclinations, and resentments, and keeps them in order.
We also see the sad state of a sinful person who lacks that control. When temptations to overeating or drinking come before him, he has no self-government. When he is provoked, he bursts out in extreme anger and other wild passions. He is like a city broken down and without walls.
In such a case, all that is good can leave him, and all that is evil can rush in. He stands open to every temptation from Satan and becomes an easy target for that enemy. He is also open to many troubles and worries. And just as ruined walls bring shame to a city, so this lack of self-control is a disgrace to him (Nehemiah 1:3).
