A man may be said to boast of a false gift in two ways. First, he may claim to have received or given something he never had and never gave. He makes a great show of his achievements and good deeds, but it is all false. He is not what he pretends to be.
Second, he may promise what he will give or do, but then do nothing. He builds people’s hopes for great things he will do for his country or his friends, or for the noble gifts he says he will leave behind. But either he has no means to carry it out, or he never meant to. Such a person is like the morning cloud that passes away and disappoints those who hoped for rain to water dry ground (Jude 1:12). He is like a cloud without water.
