Here is a great duty required of us: we must step in to help oppressed innocence. If we see someone in danger of having life or property taken away unjustly, we should do all we can to save them. That means exposing false charges, looking for proof of their innocence, and using every honest means to help. Even if they are not people we have a special duty toward, we should still help them out of love for justice.
If we see people attacked by force and violence, and we are able to rescue them, we ought to do it. Even when people place themselves in danger through ignorance, or are suddenly in trouble, like travelers on the road or ships at sea, it is our duty to help, even at some risk to ourselves. We must not be slow, careless, or indifferent when help is needed.
The verse also answers the excuse people often give for failing in this duty. They say, “We did not know. We were not aware of the danger. We were not sure the person was innocent. We did not know how to prove it or how to help, or else we would have done something.” This kind of excuse may sometimes keep people from blaming us, because they cannot easily prove what was in our minds. It is especially tempting to lie this way when our excuse cannot be checked by others, since only God knows the truth of our thoughts and intentions.
But such excuses do not escape the judgment of God. He ponders the heart and keeps watch over the soul. He sees every secret thought and motive, and nothing is hidden from him (Jeremiah 17:10). He also preserves life, which is a strong reason for us to value and protect the lives of others, since our own lives have been precious in his sight.
God knows whether our excuse is true, or whether the real reason was that we did not love our neighbor as we should. Maybe we were selfish and careless toward both God and people. So this verse shuts the mouth of conscience when it tries to hide behind weak excuses for leaving duty undone. Does not the One who ponders the heart consider it?
And he will judge us according to what he knows. His knowledge cannot be fooled, and his justice cannot be turned aside. He will repay every person according to their works, not only for evil done, but also for good that was neglected.
