This is the end of this law about leprosy. In Deuteronomy, it is not repeated in full, only remembered in a general warning, “Be careful in the plague of leprosy” (Deuteronomy 24:8).
We can learn two things from this law. First, it shows God’s kind care for Israel. This law belonged to them alone, not to the Gentiles. When Naaman the Syrian was healed of leprosy, he was not told to present himself to a priest, even though he was healed in the Jordan. The Jews healed by our Savior were told to do that. In the same way, those who hold church discipline are to judge only those within the church; God judges those outside (1 Corinthians 5:12-13).
Second, it teaches us to watch over ourselves carefully. We should keep our minds from sinful desires and habits, since these are both our sickness and our uncleanness, and they keep us fit for God’s service. We should also avoid bad company and stay away, as far as we can, from danger of being infected by it. “Do not touch the unclean thing,” says the Lord, “and I will receive you” (2 Corinthians 6:17).
