menu_book Verse in Context

30 Ummah also, and Aphek, and Rehob: twenty-two cities with their villages.

31 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families, these cities with their villages.

32 The sixth lot came out for the children of Naphtali, even for the children of Naphtali according to their families.

33 Their border was from Heleph, from the oak in Zaanannim, Adami-nekeb, and Jabneel, to Lakkum. It ended at the Jordan.

34 The border turned westward to Aznoth Tabor, and went out from there to Hukkok. It reached to Zebulun on the south, and reached to Asher on the west, and to Judah at the Jordan toward the sunrise.

Naphtali was the northernmost of all the tribes, with its border reaching toward Mount Lebanon. Leshem, also called Laish, lay at its farthest northern edge. Later, when the Danites conquered that town and renamed it Dan, people described the length of Canaan from north to south as “from Dan to Beersheba.”

Naphtali had Zebulun on the south, Asher on the west, and Judah on the east, likely a town by the Jordan with that name, not the tribe of Judah. In this tribal land, near the waters of Merom, Joshua defeated Jabin and his forces (Joshua 11:1). Capernaum and Bethsaida, towns on the northern shore of the Sea of Tiberias, were also in this area, and Christ did many miracles there. Many also think this tribe included the mountain where Christ preached his Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:1).
