This is the inheritance of Zebulun. Although he was born to Leah after Issachar, Jacob and Moses blessed him before Issachar, and the order of the lots reflects that. His land lay north of Issachar and south of Asher.

Zebulun’s territory was bordered by the Great Sea on the west and the Sea of Tiberias on the east. This matched Jacob’s prophecy: “Zebulun shall be a haven for ships” (Genesis 49:13). That fit well with the trade ships on the Great Sea and the fishing boats on the Sea of Galilee.

Some places in this tribe became known in the Old Testament, especially Mount Carmel. There Elijah, in a famous test, showed that the Lord is God and Baal is powerless. But this tribe was made far more notable in the New Testament.

Nazareth, where our blessed Savior spent much of his earthly life, was within Zebulun’s lot, and that is why he was called Jesus of Nazareth. Mount Tabor, where he was transfigured, was there too. So was the shore of the Sea of Galilee, where Christ preached many sermons and worked many miracles.
