Here we see, first, that the ground was dry (Genesis 8:13), meaning all the water had been drawn off it. On the first day of the first month, which was a joyful New Year’s Day, Noah saw this for himself. He removed part of the ark’s covering, not the whole roof, but enough to let him look out over the land around him, and the sight was deeply comforting. “Behold” is repeated to show wonder: the ground really was dry.
This reminds us that it is a great mercy simply to see dry land around us. Noah felt this more strongly than we do, because blessings returned after loss touch the heart more deeply than blessings that never stopped. The same divine power that renewed the face of the earth can also renew a troubled soul and a persecuted church. God can bring dry ground into view even where hope seemed gone and forgotten (Psalm 18:16).
Second, the ground was dried enough to become a fit home for Noah and his family (Genesis 8:14). Yet even though Noah saw the ground dry on the first day of the first month, God did not let him leave the ark until the twenty-seventh day of the second month. Noah may have wanted to leave sooner, since he was likely tired of being shut in, but God kept him there longer for his good. In kindness, God often chooses what helps us more than what we want.
God knows what is best for us better than we know ourselves. He also knows how long our restraints should last and how long we should wait for desired mercies. We may want to leave the ark before the ground is truly ready, and if the door is shut, we may try to find our own way out. But we should be content, because the time God chooses to show mercy is always the best time, when the mercy is ready for us and we are ready for it.
