The walls of the court, or church yard, were made of curtains or hangings, according to the command in Exodus 27:9 and following. This picture showed what the Old Testament church was like. It was like a garden enclosed, where worshipers were kept within a small space.
But because the enclosure was made of curtains only, it also showed that this confinement to one nation would not last forever. The whole arrangement was a tabernacle arrangement, something movable and changeable, and it would one day be taken down and folded up. Then the place of the tent would be enlarged and its cords stretched out to make room for the Gentile world, as promised in Isaiah 54:2, 3.
The church on earth is still only the court of God’s house, and those who walk in it and flourish there are happy indeed. Yet even now we are moving through these courts toward the holy place above. Blessed are those who live in that house of God, for they will keep praising him.
The enclosed court before the tabernacle also teaches us that we should come to God step by step. The priests who served had to pass through the holy court before they entered the holy house. In the same way, before sacred worship there should be a set-apart time of preparation. There we should wash our hands, so to speak, and then draw near with a true heart.
