10 If anyone comes to you and doesn’t bring this teaching, don’t receive him into your house, and don’t welcome him,

11 for he who welcomes him participates in his evil deeds.

The apostle ends this letter by putting off several things to a personal visit. “I have many things to write to you,” he says, “but I do not want to use paper and ink. I hope to come to you and talk face to face, so that our joy may be complete.” This shows that some things are better said in person than on paper. Writing can be a kindness and a pleasure, but meeting face to face may be even better.

The apostle was not too old to travel, and he was still able to serve by traveling. The fellowship of believers should be kept alive in every proper way, and it should lead to shared joy. Even faithful ministers can have their joy increased through Christian friends. As Paul said, “that I may be encouraged together with you by our mutual faith, both yours and mine” (Romans 1:12).

He also sends greetings from some close relatives of the lady he is writing to: “The children of your elect sister greet you.” God’s grace was abundant in this family. There were two chosen sisters, and likely chosen children as well. How much they will admire this grace in heaven. The apostle kindly includes the respectful greeting of the nieces to their aunt. The respect and duty of younger relatives should be encouraged.

No doubt the apostle was easy to approach and welcomed friendly, godly communication. He was ready to add to this good woman’s joy by speaking of her nieces as well as her children. May there be many such godly women, rejoicing in their godly descendants and other relatives. Amen.
