Understand how this verse speaks to what you're facing and how to apply it today
Translation: World English Bible — Catholic Edition
" For we are not commending ourselves to you again, but speak as giving you occasion of boasting on our behalf, that you may have something to answer those who boast in appearance and not in heart. "
2 Corinthians 5:12
Verse in Context
Understanding the surrounding verses prevents misinterpretation:
10 For we must all be revealed before the judgment seat of Christ that each one may receive the things in the body according to what he has done, whether good or bad.
11 Knowing therefore the fear of the Lord, we persuade men, but we are revealed to God, and I hope that we are revealed also in your consciences.
12 For we are not commending ourselves to you again, but speak as giving you occasion of boasting on our behalf, that you may have something to answer those who boast in appearance and not in heart.
13 For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God. Or if we are of sober mind, it is for you.
14 For the love of Christ compels us; because we judge thus: that one died for all, therefore all died.

Paul first explains why he seemed to praise himself and his fellow workers. It was not because he wanted to build himself up, or because he needed their approval. Rather, he was giving them words to answer his critics, who boasted about outward success and only cared about appearances. If the people could say that the gospel had reached their hearts and changed their lives, that was the best defense of the ministry when it was attacked and mocked.
He then gives the reason for their strong zeal and hard work. Some people likely mocked Paul for being so intense, as if he were out of his mind or, in modern terms, a fanatic. But Paul says their zeal was for God’s glory and the church’s good. Whether they seemed overly excited at times or calm and reasoned at other times, both kinds of speech had the same aim.
Above all, the love of Christ urged them on. That love was a strong and sweet force moving them to duty. Our love for Christ should work that way too, but even more, Christ’s love for us should move us when we truly think about it. He proved that love by dying for us.
Paul then explains what we were like before Christ died for us. We were dead, meaning dead under the law’s sentence and dead in sin. All those for whom Christ died were lost, ruined, and helpless, and they would have remained that way forever if he had not died for them.
From that comes the life they should now live. Christ died so that those made alive through his death would live for him, the one who died and rose again for them. They should not live for themselves. A believer’s life should be set apart for Christ, and we live as we should when we live for him.
