A Christian’s confession of faith can only be supported in a believable way by the two things named here, a good conscience and a good life. A good conscience is one that does its work well. It stays clean, unspoiled, and free from guilt, and then it will defend you even when people accuse you. A good life in Christ is a holy way of living, shaped by Christ’s teaching and example.
So guard your conscience and your conduct. Then, even if people speak against you and falsely charge you as if you were doing evil, you will prove them wrong and bring shame on them. You may think it is hard to suffer for doing good, for keeping a clear conscience and a holy life. But do not lose heart. It is better for you, even if worse for your enemies, to suffer for doing right than for doing wrong.
Learn from this that even the most careful believers cannot avoid the criticism and slander of wicked people. They will speak against them as if they were evil-doers and accuse them of crimes their hearts hate. Christ and his apostles were treated this way. A good conscience and a good life are the best ways to protect a good name, because they give a strong and lasting reputation.
False accusations often end in shame for the accuser, because they eventually reveal the person’s bad judgment, unfairness, lies, and lack of love. It is sometimes God’s will that good people suffer for doing what is right, for their honesty and for their faith. And just as doing good can lead to suffering, doing evil will not keep a wicked person from it. The apostle assumes that a person may suffer for both.
If the suffering of good people for doing right is so severe, what will the suffering of wicked people for doing wrong be like? It is a terrible condition when sin and suffering meet in the same person at the same time. Sin makes suffering harsher, less useful, less comforting, and more destructive.
