At the close of this letter, the apostle gives his blessing and prayer for the Thessalonians. We should want the same things for ourselves and for our friends.
He first asks that God would give them peace. By peace, we can mean every kind of good, but here it especially includes peace with God, peace in their own hearts and consciences, peace among themselves, and peace with other people. He wants them to have this peace always, in every situation, and by every proper means. Peace is often hard to gain, but it is always worth seeking. Since God is the Lord of peace, only he can give true peace that lasts. We will not have calm hearts, and others will not be at peace with us, unless the God of peace gives both.
He also asks that the Lord would be with them all. We need nothing more to make us safe and truly happy. We cannot wish for anything better for ourselves or our friends than God’s gracious presence with us. His presence guides and protects us in every path, and it comforts us in every condition. God’s presence is what makes heaven truly heaven, and it can make this world feel like heaven too. It does not matter where we are if God is with us, and it does not matter who is absent if God is present.
Finally, he asks that the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ would be with them. He ended his first letter to the Thessalonians the same way. Through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, we can hope for peace with God and enjoy God’s presence, because Christ has brought near those who were far away. His grace is everything in making us happy. The apostle loved to praise this grace and trust in it, and he signed this blessing with his own hand as a mark on each letter. He did this so the churches would not be fooled by false letters, which would have been dangerous.
We should thank God that we have the full canon of Scripture, the complete and settled collection of God’s books. By God’s special care, it has been kept pure and unspoiled through many ages. We must not add to it or take away from it. Let us believe that the Scriptures come from God, and let us shape both our faith and our conduct by this sufficient and only rule, which can make us wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Amen.
