Samuel had now been introduced to the visions of God, and this passage shows the further honor God gave him as a prophet.
God honored Samuel himself. Having begun to show Samuel favor, God continued that work and brought it to completion. Samuel kept growing, because the Lord was with him (1 Samuel 3:19). Every step in wisdom and grace comes from God’s presence with us. That presence is what makes real growth possible.
God also honored Samuel by speaking to him again. Samuel had faithfully delivered the message entrusted to him, so God used him again in his service: the Lord revealed himself again to Samuel in Shiloh (1 Samuel 3:21). God kindly repeats his visits to those who receive them well. He does not leave faithful servants without more light and guidance.
God further honored Samuel by making his words come true. God let none of Samuel’s words fall to the ground (1 Samuel 3:19). Everything Samuel spoke as a prophet proved true and came to pass at the right time. There were likely some clear signs of this soon after, which confirmed later predictions and left no doubt about his calling. God confirms the word of his servants and carries out what he has spoken (Isaiah 44:26).
Israel also honored Samuel. All the people came to know and acknowledge that Samuel was established as a prophet (1 Samuel 3:20). He became well known, because everyone who came up to Shiloh to worship noticed him, admired him, and spoke about him when they returned home. Early devotion to God is often the greatest honor a young person can have, and it can bring respect sooner than anything else. Those who honor God, he will honor.
Samuel also became very useful to his generation. The one who began early to do good soon came to do much good. His clear calling from God and his growing respect among the people gave him a great opportunity to shine as a light in Israel. When old Eli was rejected, young Samuel was established in his place, for God will never leave himself without a witness or his people without a guide.
