Here we have the end of Solomon’s story. First, the writer refers to another record that was then available, but is now lost, the Book of the Acts of Solomon (1 Kings 11:41). This was likely written by a court historian or scribe whom Solomon used to record his official affairs, and the sacred writer drew from it whatever God chose to preserve for the church.
Second, we have a brief summary of the years of Solomon’s reign (1 Kings 11:42). He ruled in Jerusalem, not partly in Hebron and partly in Jerusalem like his father David, and he ruled over all Israel, not over Judah only like his son and like David at the start of his reign. His reign lasted forty years. His rule was as long as his father’s, but his life was not. Sin shortened his days.
Third, we see his death, burial, and successor (1 Kings 11:43). He went the way of his fathers, slept with them, and was buried in David’s burial place, no doubt with honor. His son took his place on the throne. So the graves keep receiving the older generation, and the homes keep filling with the younger. As the grave keeps calling for more, so the land is never left without an heir.
