1 Chronicles 26:29 - Meaning and Application

Now that all the work in God’s house had been well supplied with Levites, we are told about those who served as officers and judges in outside matters. That work also had to be done, and it could not be neglected, even for the sake of the temple itself. Civil authority is God’s appointment for the good of his church just as much as the ministry is.

The Levites helped administer justice along with the princes and elders of the tribes. The elders could not be expected to know the law as well as the Levites, since studying it was part of the Levites’ calling. None of the Levites who served in the sanctuary, and none of the singers or gatekeepers, were involved in this outside work. Either their temple duties were enough to occupy them fully, or it would have been unwise for them to try to do both.

Their duty covered both the business of the Lord and the service of the king (1 Chronicles 26:30, 1 Chronicles 26:32). They handled both religious and civil matters. They cared for God’s tithes and the king’s taxes, punished sins against God and offenses against the government, and worked against both idolatry and injustice. In this way, they helped carry out the laws in both areas. Some likely focused more on religious matters, and others on civil matters, so that between them both God and the king were well served.

It is a great blessing when a kingdom joins its civil and religious concerns together and gives attention to both. There were more Levites serving as judges with the two and a half tribes east of the Jordan than with all the rest of Israel, 2,700 compared with 1,700 on the west side of the Jordan (1 Chronicles 26:30, 1 Chronicles 26:32). Perhaps those distant tribes had fewer judges of their own, or perhaps they needed more help because they lived far from Jerusalem and near foreign nations, where they were more exposed to idolatry. Border areas need stronger protection.

This arrangement was made in the fortieth year of David’s reign, the last year of his life and rule (1 Chronicles 26:31). The closer we come to the end of our days, the more eager we should be to do good while we still can. If we live to enjoy the fruit of our work, we should not begrudge it to those who come after us.
